Where to start?

If you are currently a staff nurse, you likely already have many of the prerequisites needed to become a travel nurse. We will inform you if there are any additional requirements and help address any missing elements

RN Degree

To qualify, you must have a registered nurse (RN) degree, with at least an Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) degree.

State License

You must have a valid license in the state where you plan to work. If you're interested in working in a different state, don't worry—we can help you with that. Further details can be found below.

NCLEX-RN Exam

After completing a nursing program, you'll need to pass the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX-RN) successfully.

Work Experience

To become a travel nurse, you should have at least one year of experience in your specialized field, preferably acquired in a hospital setting. Some hospitals may have additional criteria, so it's advisable to discuss your experience level with your recruiter to find assignments that match your qualifications.

Compliance Requirements

Once you secure an assignment, your credentialing specialist will assist you with the nursing compliance requirements that follow.

Vaccination Records & Physical Exam

Prior to starting an assignment, you'll need to undergo a physical examination and provide documentation of a recent TB test and specific vaccinations. Your credentialing specialist can coordinate any necessary vaccinations or laboratory tests, as well as your physical examination.

Licensing

The licensing process varies from state to state, and we're here to streamline it for you. If you live in a state that participates in nursing compact licensure, we can help you convert your license so you can practice in all compact states. Additionally, our team is available to assist you with nurse licensure renewals. If your license is nearing its expiration date, they will notify you and work with you to ensure it's renewed. It's important to note that we cover the cost of certain licenses—some are covered upfront, and for others, reimbursement is available. Feel free to ask your recruiter for more details.

Drug Screen & Background Check

Additionally, you'll need to undergo a drug test and a background check before your assignment begins. Usually, a drug screen is required within 30 days of the assignment's start date and annually if you continue at the same facility. Your credentialing specialist will help you schedule any necessary appointments.

Certifications

Depending on your specialty, you may require additional certifications. Your Aya team will assist you in determining what those are and will collaborate with you to find classes in your area to complete the process. Ask your credentialing specialist about which certifications are reimbursable. And remember, Aya offers access to numerous free CEUs as well!
